Education on eczema management and sharing

Parent participants in the intervention group will receive a 20-minute one-to-one teaching covering overview of eczema, medical and pharmacological management, practical skills to control eczema (prevention and drug use), habit reversal technique and relaxation exercise, followed by a 10-minute video demonstrating application of emollient, wet wrap and relaxation exercise. Parent participants will also join at least twice weekly an online group sharing of the designated website at home. A phone follow-up will be conducted two days after the commencement of intervention to check the progress of parent participants.

The child participants will receive standard medical treatments as comparative treatments including disease severity assessment by SCORAD, skin hydration and transepidermal water loss measurement, doctor’s consultation and medication prescription.

The inclusion criteria for child participants include age from 3 months to 12 years old and clinical diagnosis of moderate-to-severe eczema.

Parent participants are the parents of children meeting the above criteria who are able to read and understand Chinese.

Children with acute or chronic illnesses requiring systemic treatments will be excluded.

Parents suffering from psychiatric disorders will be excluded.

3 months of child participants and 18 year old of parent participants

12 years old of child participants and no maximum limit to parent participants

The aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of a nurse-led parental eczema education programme for Chinese parents of children with eczema. The outcomes include symptom severity, treatment adherence, parental self-efficacy, and quality of life of parents.
