Subjects undergoing left atrial appendage occlusion with deep sedation in the cardiac intervention laboratory

Subjects who are unable to tolerate the high flow nasal cannula secondary to discomfort

Subjects who are with aspiration risks and will require endotracheal intubation

Severe obstructive sleep apnoea

Subjects with anticipated difficult airway

Subjects with chronic carbon dioxide retention

Frequency of desaturation episodes

Oxygen saturation less than 92% for greater than 15 seconds at any point during the patient's anaesthesia

Rate of change of arterial blood gases, including partial pressure of oxygen (PaO2), partial pressure of carbon dioxide and pH over time

Blood gases will be sampled at 10 minutes intervals.

Need for airway manipulation

The need for manipulation of the airway by the anaesthesiologist in the event of upper airway obstruction (combined numbers of episode for jaw thrust, repositioning of the patient’s head, tactile stimulation) to maintain a patent airway and adequate oxygenation with SpO2 > 92 %

Respiratory rate

The rate of respiration of the patient under sedation as measured by capnography or thoracic impedance

Tolerability

Procedure interruption due to patient’s intolerance

Postoperative outcome in the recovery unit

Arterial blood gas (PaO2, PaCO2, pH) characteristics in the recovery unit upon admission and discharge; episodes of desaturation episodes < 92 %
