Undiagnosed diabetes is a global health issue. Previous studies have estimated that about 24.1%–75.1% of all diabetes cases are undiagnosed, leading to more diabetic complications such as stroke, dementia, and coronary heart disease and inducing huge healthcare costs. Many current methods for diabetes diagnosis, such as the random finger prick test, rely on metabolic indices, which are subject to considerable variability. In contrast, a digital approach based on retinal images represents a stable marker of overall glycemic status.
Based on Automatic Retinal Image Analysis (ARIA), we have developed ARIA-diabetes risk, which analyzes retinal images to assess the risk of diabetes in a non-invasive and convenient manner. The analysis result can be obtained in just a few minutes at an exceptional accuracy of over 90%. ARIA-diabetes risk, which is particularly suitable for population-based screening for diabetes and prediabetes, is an ideal solution to undiagnosed diabetes.
